BASALT

Basalt  is a mafic extrusive igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of lava rich in magnesium and iron exposed at or very near the surface of a terrestrial planet or a moon  More than 90% of all volcanic rock on Earth is basalt and the eruption of basalt lava is observed by geologists at about 20 volcanoes per year  Basalt is also an important rock type on other planetary bodies in the Solar System.

USES OF BASALT

Among the most well-known natural stones for construction are granite, marble, sandstone, porphyry, basalt, clay slate and limestone. These materials differ greatly in terms of their technical characteristics such as water absorption, compression strength, heat storage capacity or frost resistance. The look of a stone does not reveal anything about its quality: an affordable and a high quality variant have the same appearance but have entirely different characteristics. Hard rocks such as granite or basalt are more suitable for the exterior, whilst softer materials such as porphyry or marble are more suitable for interiors.

Basalt is used for a wide variety of purposes. It is most commonly crushed for use as an aggregate in construction projects. Crushed basalt is used for road base, concrete aggregate, asphalt pavement aggregate, railroad ballast, filter stone in drain fields, and may other purposes. Basalt is also cut into dimension stone. Thin slabs of basalt are cut and sometimes polished for use as floor tiles, building veneer, monuments, and other stone objects.

TYPES OF BASALT

Tholeiitic basalt is relatively rich in silica and poor in sodium. Included in this category are most basalts of the ocean floor, most large oceanic islands, and continental flood basalts such as the Columbia River Plateau.

High and low titanium basalts is basalt rocks are in some cases classified after their titanium content in High-Ti and Low-Ti varieties.

Mid-ocean ridge basalt is a tholeitic basalt commonly erupted only at ocean ridges and is characteristically low in incompatible elements

High-alumina basalt may be silica-undersaturated or –oversaturated.

Alkali basalt is relatively poor in silica and rich in sodium.

Basalt is a volcanic stone, used in architecture for centuries. Although basalts boast the durability of a granite, they have the consistent coloration, markings and subtlety of a limestone.

BASALT COLOURS AND STONES

Basalt is a porous material with naturally-occurring holes that may remain. Basalt is neutral in color. Basalt is usually grey to black in colour, but rapidly weathers to brown or rust-red due to oxidation of its mafic (iron-rich) minerals into hematite and other iron oxides and hydroxides.

Usage areas according to basalt stone types

Basalt stones in plaque form and with various types vary in their usage areas according to their types.

Crushed Basalt Stone: Crushed basalt stone type is mostly used by municipalities on roads.

Dolomite Basalt Stone: Mostly dolomite basalt stone is used in landscapes. It can be used as a giant flower pot placed in an artificial flower as it is used in landscapes.

Slabs Basalt Stone: It is generally used for indoor and outdoor coatings. Apart from that, stone chips can also be used in roads and parking lots, such as basalt stones. It has types with different names.

Cube Basalt Stone: It is a useful type of basalt stone. It can be cut into different size shapes. It is mostly used in decorative embroidery. Basalt stone, which is compatible with both heat and cold, is used inside and outside the building. It can be used on pavements as well as on floors.
